Greetings from APALA-DC!
Last December we had our very first (and very successful) “So You Think You Can Sing?” Karaoke Fundraiser where we raised over $1,000 for our 2012 Civic Engagement Campaign. Thanks to the energy of our members and allies, we watched some amazing performances through the night. We want to give a special thanks to our judges:Darren Shiroma, Executive Assistant to the International President for the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA; Peggy Shorey, Executive Director of Pride at Work, AFL-CIO; and Lisa Hasegawa, Executive Director of National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development.
Also, congratulations again to the winning team, National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF)-DC’s very own, Off Sync . You can check out the photos from that night here.
In January we partnered up with KAYA-DC (formerly Filipinos for Obama), KAFO (Korean American for Obama), SAFO (South Asians for Obama), APAP-DC (Asian Pacific Americans for Progress) and AAAG (Asian American Action Group) for the State of the Union viewing party to hear President Obama lay out his vision of this country—the challenges we face, the accomplishments we’ve made, and the future we imagine, especially for the AAPI community. Equipped with the hashtag #APAPSOTU we tweeted live and were featured on BarackObama.com
This month we had our annual Lunar New Year celebration at AFSCME where we regrouped and discussed programming for this year, especially focusing on our 2012 Civic Engagement Campaign, GOTV effort and May Heritage Month event. This served as our chapter launch, where we encouraged renewal of APALA DC memberships. Those who did were entered into a raffle and we would like to congratulate Jai- Rei Wang and Sui Lang Panoke who won some amazing prizes. Special thanks also to David Carpio, Political Training and Education Coordinator, AFL-CIO for speaking to us about the significance the last year has been with regards to strengthening labor’s force to organize our members in preparation for the 2012 election. If you still haven’t renewed your membership you can do so here.
Thanks again for helping us end 2011 with a bang!
Stay tuned as we kick off our Civic Engagement Campaign next month.
